I’ve seen stuff making rounds calling people who are kin as a coping thing not real kin. Can someone explain their reasoning on this to me?
For context, nonhuman communities are about 50 years old now. And in all that time, it has meant to involuntarily identify as a nonhuman or fictional being.
What the majority of us are against is when people pick things they like or want to be and call them kintypes. It doesn’t work that way. Kintypes cannot be chosen.
The word “copinglink” was coined for people who take on the persona of something as a tool to help cope with their mental or situational health. Doing it isn’t wrong, but calling it otherkin is.
tl;dr kintypes can’t be chosen, and calling it “copingkin” is appropriating our community and trying to change what we are.
