Race and Fictionkin
Its time to have a serious talk about your stance on race and fictiokin, tumblr. Tell me do you believe:
- a) being fictionkin is an immutable fact of a person’s existence, either spiritual or mental? Or,
- b) being fictionkin is a choice of identifying strongly with a character.
Unless you’re kin yourself, you probably believe B. This post is going to assume that. So, you believe that being fictionkin merely means you identify strongly with a character.
- Do you believe that being fictionkin to someone who is not the race of your birth is racist?
Lets imagine you do.
So now you believe two things, imaginary tumblr user. Being fictionkin is a choice about who you strongly identify with, and white people being fictionkin with non-white people is racist. What does that mean you also believe? Let’s see.
If being fictionkin with someone not of your race is racist, that means:
- Its racist to empathize with a character who is not your race
- Its racist to feel like an author has portrayed someone of another race in a way that makes you feel like you identify with their personality and struggles.
- It is easier for a person to identify with someone of another species than another human being from another country or skin color.
- People of other races are so inherently alien that you are incapable of understanding and identifying with their struggles.
- Unicorns and stars have more in common with white people than black people have in common with white people.
Now tumblr, do you believe any of that?
