This is probably one of those posts that I’ll regret making, but can someone please explain fictionkin to me? I’m not trying to troll/hate…I just really…don’t get it? There’s been plenty of characters that I’ve cried over, felt incredibly emotionally attached to, wished I could meet/be etc etc but fictionkin still really confuses me. Does anyone have links or something I can look at?
Basically, fictionkin is someone who believes (genuinely and seriously) that they are spiritually or mentally the same person as a fictional character.

Ok I get it a little more now (and thank you for being kind enough to link me to that helpful ask!) but my question is, how do people find out that they’re fictionkin? Are there fictionkin out there that don’t yet realise their identities because they haven’t seen the piece of media that their kin is from? (Sorry I imagine people must ask stuff like this a lot.)
Great questions! Yes, people do ask how to tell if they’re fictionkin a lot (here are some previous answers from my faq [x] [x] [x] if you want to check them out.)
Finding out that you’re fictionkin generally starts with what’s called an Awakening, which is a period of time where a fictionkin begins to question and understand their identity. Often an awakening is brought on by the first time they see the character who is them in whatever media they’re in. Sometimes it doesn’t happen until later, such as when the character goes through a particularly traumatic event. Sometimes it happens earlier, with the fictionkin having memories and feelings that they don’t understand until brought into context with that character. Here is some more great info on awakening.

This is actually a wonderful question that I haven’t had the opportunity to answer recently. The answer is yes, absolutely.
There are people that could eventually be considered ‘fictionkin’ who have never seen the media there kin is from. Some of these people haven’t awakened yet, and won’t be caused to awaken until until they do see their source material. This is exactly why when a new series/movie/story comes out a lot of new fictionkin appear from it. Without seeing it, there was nothing to cause them to awaken.
Likewise there are awakened people who currently consider themselves otherkin, might be caused to be called fictionkin if/when a fiction that resembles the life they remember comes out. I can imagine that freaking someone out pretty seriously!
