vulcankin:

Okay so there’s been this discussion going on on my dashboard about the difference between fictionkin and fictive and what that really means. It’s been very interesting to read and I’ve learned some stuff I didn’t know before!

However, I think I figured out some way to describe the difference, but please correct me if you feel I’m wrong!

Fictives are out-sourced into a system from a work of fiction. They ARE that character and (generally) have the same past as what happened in their canon up to the point they were out-sourced in. They are that character and have those experiences currently. Their past is what happened in their canon.

Fictionkin ARE also that character they are kin of. However, fictionkin do not directly have the same experiences as that character. There is a degree of separation, whether because of the multiverse or reincarnation or whichever you believe to be the “form” you have taken of your kin/yourself. You do not have the same past as your kin (except perhaps in a past life or in other universe memories.)

And yes, it is possible for fictives to identify as fictionkin.

For example, a fictive in my system, Jack, is the character Jack Wynand/Jack Ryan from Bioshock. However, he also identifies as fictionkin of Max Rockatansky.

He’s not very good at describing his feelings on it, but from what he’s been able to express about it he feels that he and Max Rockatansky are the same person, just living out different lives in two separate universes. Therefore, they are each other. He IS Max Rockatansky. But as his past is from the Bioshock canon, he is fictionkin of Max, and not a fictive of Max.

He is a fictive of Jack Wynand, and fictionkin of Max Rockatansky.

Maybe that is a better way of explaining it?
