Otherkin and Misinformation
As many will know, there is a lot of misinformation floating around Tumblr about Otherkin, so I hope to clear up some of it.
-Otherkinity is not gender or sexual identity. It is a psychological and/or spiritual identity.
-Otherkinity has nothing to do with the LGBT+ community, which means a person can be both appart of that community and an Otherkin.
-Otherkin are not oppressed. Maybe bullied, but not oppressed.
-Otherkinity is not just something Tumblr created. The concept itself has existed for a long time, but the term otherkin was first coined in the 1990s by an online mailing list known as Elvenkin Digest. If anything, Otherkinity was taken and made into a trend on Tumblr, which should have never happened in the first place.
-Otherkinity itself is not a coping mechanism.
-Otherkin are not just a group of children. There are many Otherkin who are grown adults.
-Just because you relate something and feel a connection to it, does not mean you are an Otherkin. If anything, you would be considered Other-hearted (I have made a post earlier discussing the differences between Otherkin and Other-hearted). Even then, you could just really like the thing. You don’t have to be an Otherkin to enjoy things in life. It’s apart of the human experience to find and enjoy things like flying, swimming, etc.
-The Otherkin community does not just exist on Tumblr. There are many Otherkin websites and forums that contain good information and great members to talk to.
There you have it.
