I think it needs to be acknowledged that our little kin community has had some troubles over the past few days. There’s been a huge increase in the number of antis posting in our tags, a couple of mainly inactive antis are back, and there even seems to be an increase in troll blogs. With the addition of the problems with otherkinfaq, it might seem like the final nail in the figurative coffin.
But guys, we’ve always faced these kinds of opponents on tumblr. Sure, antis are a nasty slap in the face when going through the kin tags, but who cares? They’re imbeciles who are literally just going online and browsing the tags for the express purpose of pissing themselves off. Yeah, we wish they’d go away, but they’re insignificant in our lives. They don’t know us. They know nothing about you, they can’t tell you you’re invalid.
Yes, the trolls make us look invalid, but only to people who would have refused to listen to us in the first place and don’t do their own research. People who really try to learn about us will be able to discount them easily.
Whatever is going on with otherkinfaq, it will resolve itself. Does it suck that they’re posting anti-kin, transphobic, and generally nasty stuff? Yeah. Is there anything we can do about it? Nope. Is there anything we can do damage control wise? Yes! Spread the news that otherkinfaq isn’t a reliable source for otherkin information for now. Refute arguments using their most recent posts as evidence for why kin aren’t valid. Stop telling people to visit their blog for kin information, and instead link to other blogs or specific posts.
Everything will return to normal eventually guys. Until then, keep yourselves safe. If that means avoiding the kin tags or taking a brief hiatus from tumblr, do it. If that means blocking otherkinfaq until that mess gets figured out, do it. Your safety comes first. If you can, damage control is great, but if it makes you feel anxious, invalid, depressed, don’t do it.
