Been getting some tough questions lately. I’m not complaining, I think it’s awesome. Thanks.

So, ghostkin.
I don’t think it’s slowly becoming controversial, I think that it started out as something people were ambivalent towards and that maybe while it was merely accepted by the predominant uwu culture of Tumblr, that it being questioned is hopefully a sign of people being more critical on here lately.

Can a ghost be considered a species?
I think is the question at the heart of the conversation, the debate. The kintype (or theriotype), of an otherkin (or therian) is a species other than human, it’s the other part. Is a disincarnate human spirit no longer human once it’s out of it’s body?

The initial thought I had on the matter was no. That being a dead person doesn’t make you a different species. A dead X is still an X.

But the thing is, it doesn’t just stop there.
Being disincarenate is a distinctly different experience than being physically incarnate into a body. It’s possible that prolonged existence as a disincarnate spirit will leave it’s mark.

I don’t know where it falls on the spectrum of otherkin v.s. not otherkin, but I figure that a person shaped by memories of the space between lifetimes has enough in common with kin to lean more in that direction than the other.

I know several people, IRL, who could be seen as falling into this category.  They are walk-ins in multiple systems, and consider themselves otherkin for separate reasons from those which make them consider themselves spiritually “ghosts”.  Their spiritual practices frequently involve working with the dead, in the capacity of psychopomps.  On tumblr, however, I have not seen any evidence that “ghostkin” rise to this level of serious spiritual belief.  There may be some individuals out there who are serious, but the majority seem in my opinion to be just another fad kintype with little substance behind it.
