I don’t get fictionkin. I genuinely don’t understand it. I can relate to a character where sometimes I’m like “Wow this is me in character form.” But then I don’t attack people and be like “Stop hurting me!” I’d ask an anti but…I’d rather not.

Ah, but see, that’s just tumblr’s backwards idea of what fictionkin is. Fictionkin that’s… well, actually fictionkin is when you’re kin with a fictional species. Dragons, trolls, elves, whatever. Similar to being otherkin (like you might be kin with birds, or tigers, or whatever), but… fictional animals.

The “kin” the antis are talking about just… isn’t kin.

🍎 AJ

Not exactly.

Otherkin are those who simply identify as a non-human creature, which includes mythological creatures. What you speak of are Therians, which are those who identify as an Earth-based non-human creature.

Fictionkin are those who identify as fictional characters. Although some may identify as a fictional character who is also non-human, it is not always the case. Many supposedly identify as characters who are considered human.

Ah… no.

Normally I’d leave this for Sunny to respond to, but she’s kinda hammered right now, so I’ll do my best.

From her experience as someone who’s been a part of the otherkin community for years now, the idea of “fictionkin” as you just described it has only recently become… well, a thing. Sure, there are people who identify strongly with certain characters, and that whole “wow, ___ is totally my spirit animal” (which has been called out, as an idea, as being appropriative of actual kin and actual spirit animals) thing, but that isn’t the same as being kin.

Therian is interchangeable with fictionkin. It’s a matter of preference.

I’m a little confused about the description of your blog- you mention how you exist to clear up “misinformation floating around the Tumblr community,” but everything you just responded with seems to be exactly the kind of misinformation you’re talking about. All anyone knows about “kin” now because of tumblr is how people claim to be “fictionkin” in the sense that they “are literally x character.”

I never said that relating to something is what the concept is. Those are words you pulled out of my mouth.

The term “Fictionkin” is a recent one.

I don’t know where you have been looking, but I have never seen on any Otherkin forum, FAQ, or website using the term “Fictionkin” to describe those who identify as a mythological creature.

People who identified as such used the term Otherkin since the term was first coined back in the 1990s.

No, that’s not quite right @anti-anti-wincest
Fictionkin identify as either a fictional character or an “OC” character from a fictional universe (i.e. Ichigo from bleach, or a pokémon from Kanto.) Some of these characters may be non-human, but many are.
Otherkin identify as, typically, a non-human, mythic creature (dragon, angel, faerie, etc.)
Therians identify as earthly creatures (i.e. a domestic dog, or a buffalo.)
@fromfiction you’re really good at clearing this stuff up? I dunno if it can get explained any better?

Fictionkin are anything specifically depicted in media, species or individuals.

Dragon and elves and such mythological beings fall under otherkin.

I can’t stand how information gets so warped on tumblr. @anti-anti-wincest fictionkin used to be under the (now defunct) label of otakukin. We’ve been around long before tumblr. You’ve really got some wires crossed. @fromfiction has a shit ton of resources on this. Like, there’s no reason to be this wrong about something except that you weren’t involved and don’t know anything about it, so you’re just making shit up as you go.

But HEY I’ve only been kin for 19 years what do I know

@anti-anti-wincest fictionkin have been around for more than a decade. We are people who believe we spiritually (or mentally) are a particular character, or member of a fictional species. I’ve been in the kin community for 10 years. I’m the reincarnation of Ken Ichijouji. Check out my websites, or message me for more info.
