On the race/kintype thing, what would you say about something like a white person identifying as, say, John or Jake? Since neither of them actually have confirmed races, BUT a lot of the fandom has non-white headcanons for them, it’s kind of a double-edged sword I guess.

My stance on kintypes is that race is irrelevant, because people don’t chose their kintypes. I personally believe in souls and that anyone can be born with the soul of any fictional character. It makes no sense for a soul to stay the same culture or skin color every incarnation.
