ghostlypastelcarnival:

can someone calmly and as politely as possible (meaning without treating me like an idiot) explain to me why people say “could you not be kin with X type of character,” please? I see things like that a lot and I don’t want to disrespect marginalized groups but people can’t choose what their kintypes are (with an exception for coping kin maybe) so I really don’t understand how that would make sense honestly. I’m asking an honest question, one that I’ve never seen answers to, and I’m also really tired so my wording is likely very rude and for that I’m sorry. But? Can someone please explain it to me?
(Please note if you treat me like an idiot I WILL block you and likely won’t even read most of what you have to say)

There’s a lot going on when you see one of those posts.

Firstly, the people making those posts often do not fully understand being kin, and think that its a choice, and that they could stop being kin of someone problematic if they wanted to.

Secondly, some people who are members of marginalized groups do feel offended by the existence of kin who are kin with marginalized characters.

I want to stress that NO marginalized group has a unified stance on whether or not kin are offensive to them.

There are lots and lots of POC and disabled people who understand that people can’t help who they’re kin of, and think its perfectly fine to be kin of these characters.

There are also some people who are not members of marginalized groups who like to stir trouble, and harass kin, and telling them that they can’t be kin of marginalized characters is a good way to do so.

It should be noted that the initial claim that “Its racist to be kin of a POC if you’re not a POC” was made by a group of white girls who were pretending to be Japanese.
