Hi! I have some questions about fiction/otherkin? I seriously hope I don’t sound rude here, it’s just a genuine question I really want to know. How are you related to a character/animal that was never real? How can you have the soul of something/someone that was never physically real? Or, what if you’re kin with a fictional character, and what if that story was never written? Would you not exist? I’m really sorry if this is a rude question, I’m just confused as to how it works. Thank you!

Hi anon. People ask this question a lot. I’d say its the number one question that people ask of fictionkin.

How are you related to a character/animal that was never real?

We are not related to them, we are them. For example if someone is Legolas fictionkin, that means that they were Legolas. They experienced his life, and it is a part of their identity. Likewise, if someone is pikachu kin, that means that they believe that they were in some way a pikachu. They feel like spiritually or psychologically the character or creature IS them.

How can you have the soul of something/someone that was never physically real?

Other kin may answer this differently, but I will give you the most widely accepted answer, and the one that I believe. Fictional characters and creatures were/are physically real, just not in this universe/dimension/reality. Most fictionkin in multiverse theory, that is to say that there are an infinite number of alternate universes. That means that there are universes where Pokemon happened instead of our reality, and universes where Lord of the Rings happened, etc etc.

Or, what if you’re kin with a fictional character, and what if that story was never written? Would you not exist?

There are lots of kin whose stories were never written down, however these people usually call themselves otherkin instead of fictionkin. Because being fictionkin/otherkin means (many believe) having your soul come from another universe, it doesn’t matter whether someone here writes down the story. Theoretically, if someone were otherkin, and they wrote the story of their life, and it was published, then they would become fictionkin. Its only a matter of terminology.
