do you think some people take fictionkins to far like there are people who say “don’t follow me if you kin with the same character as me” its kind of?????? idk

I’m going to get a lot of shit for this.

On Do Not Follow lists in general: I think ‘do not follow if’ lists of any kind are stupid. First of all there is no way to enforce them, and trying to only creates fights and drama. Secondly, someone following your blog doesn’t effect you in any way- they can’t make posts appear on your dash to upset you, and they are perfectly capable of reblogging/seeing your posts without following you. You can’t control what someone else does with your posts on a public blog. There should be a friends filter, but there isn’t. If you honestly have problem with a certain kind of content (as many people do) what you should do is blacklist it, and unfollow people who post that sort of thing untagged. That will ACTUALLY remove upsetting material from your blog, rather than simply flagging you for drama.

On avoiding “kin of the same character”: I understand that some people genuinely feel distressed and ‘invalidated’ by other people who share their kinself. I don’t ‘get it’, personally. Typically one either believes in the multiverse theory in which case there are an infinite number of other possible ‘yous’ who the other person might be kin of- or you believe that fictionkin is psychological, in which case there’s no reason another person can’t share the same mental framework.

There is pretty much NO argument for a theory of fictionkin that allows for one and only one ‘version’ of a character to be the true or real one. I’m sorry, but that’s just how it is.

That said, people need to do what they need to do for their own mental health. I understand that interacting with people who share your identity can be weird and uncomfortable. If that means refusing to interact with others who share the same kinself, that’s fine. No one is forcing anyone to interact with anyone they don’t want. I don’t think DNF lists work, but if that’s how you want to go about it, that’s fine for you.

However!! Do NOT harass people who share your kinself identity and do not claim to be the ‘one true’ kin of a character. This is abusive, trollish behavior.

If you are honestly upset by the idea that someone else shares your kinself, think how upset someone else feels when you invalidate their identity by saying YOU are the only one there is. Its nasty, and I hate to use this word, but yeah Its triggering.

As a personal anecdote I ran into a complete assclown in the tags about a week or so ago claiming to be the ‘one true’ Kankri from Homestuck. He refused to even acknowledge that there’s more than one Kankri WITHIN THE SOURCE ITSELF. He was an abusive asshole who went out of his way to invalidate me and tell me that I couldn’t be Vriska because he ‘knew the real Vriska’, while refusing to acknowledge any other points of view.

Don’t be that guy.

But as long as you’re not that guy
