Psychological kin are as legitimate as spiritual kin. They experience all the same phenomena as spiritual kin (memories, dysphoria, supernumerary phantom limbs, etc) but they attribute them to to brain architecture/mental quirks rather than to souls or alternate dimensions.

Its important to note that psychological kin are not necessarily mentally ill, nor consider being kin a delusion. Psychological kin are also not in control of their kintypes, any more than spiritual kin are.

Mental illness could affect psychological kin. It could affect spiritual kin too. There are plenty of kin, both spiritual and psychological who are affected by mental illness. However, it is not what we attribute our being kin to, and there are lots of kin without any mental illnesses whatsoever.
